Conclusion and Reflection
In this section, I present an analysis of the development process, the lessons learned throughout the project, and the possible next steps after the game jam.
Process Analysis:
Reflection on What Worked Well: We maximized our limited resources, particularly by opting for a simple graphic style and reusing freely available assets. Team cohesion and clear task division were essential for the project to progress in an organized manner and stay on schedule.
What Could Be Improved: During development, we recognized the need to reduce the project scope and simplify some planned mechanics, such as introducing new shells with unique abilities and the complexity of puzzle-solving. These simplifications were necessary due to the short time available, allowing us to focus on delivering a complete and cohesive game experience within the limited timeframe. However, this decision also highlighted the importance of more detailed planning to avoid cuts that could compromise the original vision of the project.
Teamwork and Communication Aspects: Communication was smooth and effective, primarily through the use of tools like Discord and GitBook. However, identifying the need for additional support in specific areas earlier on could have mitigated some of the challenges faced.
Lessons Learned:
Key Lessons from the Experience: The importance of planning and prioritizing tasks according to the team's skills. Knowing when to simplify an idea or delegate tasks to avoid overload was a crucial lesson, especially in a time-limited scenario like a game jam.
Skills and Knowledge Acquired or Improved: We improved our ability to make quick and effective decisions under pressure, particularly in adapting and simplifying the scope to ensure the project was completed. Additionally, the experience reinforced the value of utilizing resources available in the game development community.
Next Steps:
Considerations for Continuing the Project After the Game Jam: Evaluate whether the game has the potential to be developed beyond the prototype created during the jam. We might consider expanding the concept and revisiting the mechanics and design elements that were simplified, such as the addition of new shells with differentiated abilities.
Possible Updates, Expansion, or Release: Analyze the feasibility of launching the game as a full title, including graphical improvements, adding new mechanics, and creating an original soundtrack. We may also consider releasing the game on indie platforms to reach a broader audience.
